Repair or Replace? How to Know When It's Time to Say Goodbye to Your A/C

As summer approaches, many homeowners start wondering: Is it time to replace my air conditioner, or will a repair do the trick? At Service First Heating and Cooling, we know this can be a tough—and often costly—decision. That’s why we’re here to break it down and help you make the smartest choice for your comfort and your wallet.

🔧 When a Repair Makes Sense

Sometimes your A/C just needs a little TLC to keep it running strong. Consider a repair if:

1. Your unit is under 10 years old
Most air conditioners are built to last about 12–15 years. If your system is still relatively young and has been well maintained, a repair is likely your best bet.

2. The repair is minor and affordable
If you’re dealing with a faulty capacitor, a bad thermostat, or a clogged drain line—these are usually quick, budget-friendly fixes.

3. Your energy bills are stable
If your system is still running efficiently and your energy usage hasn’t spiked, there may not be a reason to replace it just yet.

4. It’s your first or second repair
Frequent breakdowns can signal a bigger problem, but an occasional issue doesn’t always mean it’s time for a new system.

🚫 When It’s Time to Replace Your A/C

A new system may be the better option if:

1. Your unit is over 12–15 years old
Even with maintenance, older units lose efficiency and are more likely to break down when you need them most.

2. Repair costs are adding up
Here’s a good rule of thumb: If a repair costs more than 50% of what a new system would cost—or you’re constantly calling for service—it’s time to think long-term.

3. You’re experiencing uneven cooling or high humidity
Your system might be struggling to keep up, especially if it wasn’t properly sized or is just wearing out.

4. Your energy bills are increasing
Older systems work harder, use more energy, and cost more to run. Today’s energy-efficient models can significantly lower your monthly bills.

5. R-22 refrigerant is involved
If your older unit uses R-22 (Freon), replacing it is a smart move. R-22 is being phased out, making it expensive and difficult to find.
