It’s hot outside, you turn on your A/C, and… nothing but warm air. 😓 It’s frustrating—and usually means something’s not working as it should. At Service First Heating and Cooling, we get calls like this all the time during the warmer months, and we’re here to help you troubleshoot the most common reasons your A/C isn’t blowing cold air.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Need a Check

Before jumping to conclusions, make sure your thermostat is set to "cool" and the temperature is set below your current room temperature. Also check that the fan is set to "auto"—not “on,” which can circulate air without cooling it.

2. Your Air Filter Is Dirty

A clogged or dirty filter can restrict airflow and cause your system to freeze up or work inefficiently. If it’s been a while since you changed it, try replacing the filter and see if the performance improves.

3. The Outdoor Unit Is Blocked or Dirty

Your A/C system needs clear airflow around the outdoor condenser unit. If it’s covered in leaves, dirt, or debris—or if bushes are too close—it can’t do its job effectively. Turn off the power and gently clean around the unit if needed.

4. Refrigerant Levels Are Low

Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons an A/C blows warm air. This usually means there's a leak. If your system is low on refrigerant, it won’t be able to cool your air properly—and it’s time to call a professional.

5. The Coils Are Frozen

If you’ve noticed ice on the outside unit or inside the air handler, your system may be frozen due to poor airflow, a dirty filter, or low refrigerant. Turn off the unit to allow it to thaw and call us to inspect the cause.

6. Electrical Issues or a Tripped Breaker

Sometimes, the indoor unit runs but the outdoor unit doesn’t, often due to a tripped circuit breaker or blown fuse. Check your electrical panel for any tripped breakers and reset them if necessary. If it happens repeatedly, give us a call.

7. Compressor or Major Component Failure

If your system is older, one of the internal components—like the compressor—may be failing. Unfortunately, this often requires professional repair or even replacement.

💡 When to Call a Pro

If you’ve checked the basics and your A/C is still not cooling, it’s time to call your trusted neighborhood HVAC experts. At Service First Heating and Cooling, we’ll inspect your system, diagnose the issue, and get your home back to cool and comfortable—without pressure or upselling.
